In the lab, the addition of conc. sulfuric acid to sodium chloride gives steamy fumes of HCl gas.

This reaction is first stage of the Leblanc process for making sodium carbonate from salt.

This process is also used for making hydrogen chloride and sodium sulfate (the Mannheim process).
