Isobutene is hydrated to t-butanol, both to manufacture t-butanol and to purify purify isobutene because the reaction is reversible. 60% sulfuric acid is used.

Isobutene is more reactive than 1-butene or cis or trans 2-butene and this reaction can be used to separate the branched isomer from the linear isomers.
