When excess ammonia solution is added to a solution of pink hexaaquacobalt(II) ion, ligand substitution takes place giving a pale brown (or straw coloured) solution of hexaamminocobalt(II) ion. (Only two moles of ammonia are used.)

On standing in air the pale brown solution darkens.
