If aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and sodium carbonate are added there will be a white precipitate of silver carbonate.

This reaction can be confused with a positive test for chloride ion. However, if the test is carried out under aqueous acid conditions, the carbonate ion will be lost as carbon dioxide.
