Moisture sensitive: fumes of HCl on exposure to air. AlCl3 is nothing like AlCl3 hexahydrate.At high temperatures in the gas phase, aluminium chloride exists as discrete trigonal planar AlCl3 species, but on cooling these dimerise to Al2Cl6. Aluminium chloride is a halophilic Lewis acid with a strong affinity for chloride ion.
