BF3 is hydrolysed to a mixture of orthoboric acid and tetrafluoroboric acid.

The reaction takes place in stages. First a mol of BF3 is hydrolysed to H3BO3 and HF. The HF then reacts with BF3 to give H+[BF4]–.
