Free radical (photochemical) chlorination (halogenation) of methane to trichloromethane (chloroform).
The reaction usually gives mixtures of chlorinated products: chloromethane, dichloromethane (methylene chloride), trichloromethane (chloroform), tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride), as well as small amounts of chlorinated ethanes etc.
