Methanol synthesis gas, a synthesis gas rich in hydrogen, is used to produce methanol.

A ZnO/Cr2O3 catalyst mixture is usually employed. CuO catalysts allow the use of lower pressures but are sensitive to contamination. Very short residence times are used to stop the formation of ethers and esters.

Steel can react with the CO at high pressure to form Fe(CO)5.
