Methanol can be converted into single cell protein, a food source (animal feed). One ton of methanol can give 0.7 tons of SCP.
The conversion is carried out by yeast or bacteria. While many micro organisms can convert alkanes (from methane to heavy fuel oil) to SCP, the most difficult step is the first oxidation. For this reason is is advantageous to start with methanol which has the added advantage that it is water soluble.Industrial Organic Chemistry, 3rd. Ed. K. Weissermel, H.-J. Arpe, VCH (1997)
