When naphtha and/or gas oil are thermo-cracked there are many byproducts, including the C-4 butanes, isobutanes, butenes, isobutenes, butynes, etc.

The individual components are separated into pure compounds by chemical and physical means: for example dienes, alkynes and allenes are removed selective hydrogenation; selective adsorption using molecular sieve.
