Long chain alkanes (paraffins) are "sulfoxidated" with sulfur dioxide and oxygen to the secondary alkyl sulfonic acid under the influence UV light. Sodium hydroxide is used to convert the acid into the corresponding sec alkyl sulfonic acid sodium salts.
