At high temperature, tetracarbonylhydrocobalt can loose a carbonyl to give the tetra-coordinated cobalt Lewis acid (tetracarbonylhydrocobalt) which has a high affinity towards olefins.

This reaction takes place under industrial hydroformylation conditions.
