Aldehydes such as butanal, can be oxidised to carboxylic acids (butanoic acid) using air and a catalyst (Cu, Fe, Co, Mn, etc.)

In the lab it is convienient to use an oxidising agent such as potassium dichromate(VI) in aqueous acid.
