The octahedral blue hexaaquacopper(II) complex ion undergoes ligand exchange, with an associated change in coordination number from six to four, to give the the tetrahedral, yellow-green tetrachlorocopper(II) complex ion.

The chloride ion ligand is physically larger than the water (aqua) ligand.
