The octahedral pink hexaaquachromium(II) complex ion undergoes ligand exchange, with an associated change in coordination number from six to four, to give the the tetrahedral, blue tetrachlorocobalt(II) complex ion.

The chloride ion ligand is physically larger than the water (aqua) ligand.
