The blue solution of pentaaquaoxovanadium(IV) ion reacts with granulated zinc and dilute sulfuric acid to give a dull blue-grey solution of hexaaquavanadium(III) ion.

If the reaction is performed with dilute hydrochloric acid a green solution of tetraaquadichlorovanadium(III) ion will form.
