Orange dichromate(VI) reacts with granulated zinc and aqueous hydrochloric acid to give a mixed ligand complex, the green dichlorotetraaquachromium(III) ion.

Even using sulfuric acid, some substitution of the hexaaquachromium(III) ion occurs and the ruby red (red-violet) of the ionic solid its solutions is not observed.
