When a little dilute ammonia solution is added to a solution of very pale violet (or sometimes yellowish) hexaaquairon(II) ion, the complex cation acts as a Brønsted acid and loses three protons giving a rust-brown precipitate of the neutral complex triaaquatrihydroxyiron(III) and three ammonium ions.
