When a little dilute ammonia solution is added to a ruby-red solution of hexaaquachromium(III) ion, the complex cation acts as a Brønsted acid and loses three protons giving a green precipitate of the neutral complex triaaquatrihydroxychromium(III), and three ammonium ions.
