In a basic oxygen converter the dissolved sulfur must be removed to produce a high quality steel. However, oxygen cannot be used as it will oxidise the iron to iron(III) oxide before it oxidises the sulfur to sulfur dioxide.

This is reason why magnesium (or calcium) metal is used to remove the sulfur before oxygen is used to reduce the carbon levels.
